When you grow up on a Park Rapids, MN family resort, you get a little sentimental about things. That's the case with me. I see various things around the resort that my family had a hand in and think "My dad built that" or "My mom designed that." This month I've been particularly sentimental about the rock wall on our swimming beach. It was my mom's idea to have something artistically define the resort's swimming beach, and so in the fall of 1982 my dad built it. It's been dying a slow death, and this year we decided it was time to remove it altogether. I felt it a travesty to tear out what was left, but my dad simply said, "Honey, nothing lasts forever." And so, in came the landscapers to tear out in one hour what it took my dad weeks to build.
The wall was built back in the day when you didn't have to have permits for resort improvements, and the term "shore impact zone" didn't exist. Walls like Dad built aren't allowed any more because they just don't hold up. The picture below shows what happened to the wall the VERY FIRST spring, before ANY guests got to see or enjoy it!
Ice-out did quite a number on the rock wall the first spring!
And the repair! Dad is probably mumbling something like, "A resorter's work is never done."
Flying W Gardens did the new landscape work for us. We worked with Becker County Soil and Water for the design, which includes rip rap, a storm water runoff plan, erosion control measures, and native plants with long and strong root structures to help keep the lakeshore in place. All the plants will go into place this spring.
The beach before the project started. She is looking tired.
Let the work begin!
This project required a lot of rock.
Snow is better than rain for working (or so I'm told).
These steps will be nice.
We are excited about the new beach design, because it is one of those resort improvements that ALL of our guests get to use and enjoy. And it also will add a natural, beautiful touch to the overall landscape of the resort. Will it last 32 years like Dad's rock wall did? We hope so, but like Dad says, "Nothing lasts forever."
Until next time ~~ Jennifer
