We believe that the fall season is one of the best kept secrets in Minnesota. There is still SO much to do in the Park Rapids area, with a steady change in both the weather and the scenery.
So far this fall we've had guests go swimming, fishing and canoeing. We've had guests ride their ATVs in Two Inlets State Forest, ride their motor scooters on Wilderness Drive in Itasca State Park, and ride their bicycles on the Heartland Trail to Dorset. One cabin brought four kayaks and two canoes and explored area rivers and streams each day they were here.
Many are watching wildlife and birding. One guest saw two black bears one afternoon on his daily walk! The bald eagles are still harassing the loons, causing early morning "yelling" by the loons. A grey fox is heard and seen frequently, and a barred owl gets pretty noisy this time of year, usually at dusk. Swans are beginning to make an appearance. Oh, and let's not forget about the wild turkeys, who all had babies over the summer!
Jana Thompson (see photo above) of Thompson Photography, out of Wyoming, paid us a three day visit to see what type of wildlife she could capture. You can tell she's the real deal by the size of her camera lens, AND the fact that it's camo covered to boot! The weather wasn't fully cooperative to help her get pictures of wildlife. The rain kept most animals from moving about too much. She did make a valiant effort to get a picture of a Kingfisher, which hangs out by the fishing pier, the main swimming dock, and the outlet to Two Inlets Lake (Hay Creek) this time of year. Our black squirrels also intrigued her, and I know she got a picture of a spider on the dock and a great sunset. We were part of a larger road trip for her, and her next stop is in Theodore Roosevelt National Park to try to get some pictures of some wild horses.
As I look out over the lake right now, the leaves are just beginning to change color, so we have a lot of tremendous fall days still ahead. Please consider coming to our northern Minnesota resort for a quick visit over the next four weeks, and experience a part of Minnesota's best kept secret!
Until next time ~~ Jennifer
